Hedgehog wheels need to have very specific features to ensure both the safety and efficiency of the device.
Pet-store rodent wheels such as the silent spinner or comfort wheel are not made with hedgehog use in mind so they are not entirely appropriate. Please go through the char below to view a list of popular wheels and their pros and cons. Please note that for a full grown hedgehog, you will likely require a wheel that is 12 inches or larger.
Pros: Safe, silent, durable, easy to clean. Cons: Expensive, not available through pet stores.
Pros: Cheap, readily available, safe. Cons: Noisy, not durable, can be a pain to clean. This wheel is best if you're on a budget.
Pros: Takes up less vertical space, readily available, cheap, easy to soak off debris. Cons: Tends to fling poop, not as durable, not silent, cannot fit litter pan underneath.
Pros: Cheap, readily available Cons: Unsafe as toes can get caught and damaged in seam, NOT SILENT AT ALL, hard to clean, breaks easily. Just don't do it. If you must, run a line of glue to close off the dangerous seam to protect hedgie toes.
